Nature Screensavers

Today nature screensavers are on virtually every personal computer, and it is even estimated that about 4.8 million download nature screensaver programs daily - everything from art to movies, to celebrities, 3D and nature screensavers. But, just twenty years ago, the word and the program didn’t even exist.

History of Nature Screensavers
Early monitors were built using cathode ray technology or CRT, much like televisions, using a screen coated with a phosphor compound. When this phosphor compound was hit with high speed electrons (emitted from the back of the monitor), the screen illuminated, allowing the user to see data and images. Unfortunately, when a stationary image like the Windows toolbar or video game background stayed on the screen for a long time, those areas would develop something termed burn-in. Burn-in appeared as a permanently grayed out area and the monitor quickly became useless. To prevent this, nature screensaver software programs developed to change the image displayed after a set amount of inactivity.

These software programs, called nature screensavers, originally just turned the entire screen black. However, in 1998 some ingenious software developers developed a 16-bit program, called Magic Screensaver. This groundbreaking program was the beginning of the whole industry, nature screensavers and all, quickly going worldwide solely by word-of-mouth advertising and a primitive 1990 internet.

The race was now on to develop even more inventive, interesting images, launching a new genre of nature screensavers.  Developers took the next step to animated, moving images ranging from cartoons to psychedelic patterns and visual effects to nature screensavers. Naturally, the next step was to turn 3D images into nature screensaver programs. Swimming fish, flying birds and other types of nature screensavers quickly became and continue to be popular nature screensaver downloads.

Nature Screensaver Use Today
Today, computer monitor technology prevents the screen burn-in problem, but nature screensavers continue to be popular programs used in a variety of ways.

  1. Security - Many users set the nature screensaver with password protection. Once the nature screensaver is activated, a password is required of the user to re-enter the system.
  2. Corporate Identity - Corporations often use a single nature screensaver on all computer systems to maintain a consistent appearance and eliminate inappropriate images.
  3. Distributed Computing - When systems are inactive or in the nature screensaver mode, data can be processed from another source.
  4. Information – Nature screensavers today can be a source of information in either static, (the program cycles through a series of facts about a country, or history, etc.) or real-time, such as a local weather updater. Nature Screensavers can give images of geographic locations.
  5. By far the most popular use of nature screensavers today is strictly for entertainment and personalization, with users downloading celebrities, to art, to religion and nature screensavers.
